Our Approach to Radon Mitigation

What to Expect from Radon Testing

Idaho Radon offers prompt scheduling, allowing you to set a radon testing appointment quickly and conveniently. Here, we will install a continuous radon detector. We will then plan a follow-up visit to go over the findings. There, the specialist will print the radon test results.

What to Do If Your Home Has High Radon Levels

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends radon reduction services if levels exceed 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). If there are high concentrations of radon gas in your home, we will develop a radon mitigation system tailored to your unique situation:

  1. We address the stack effect or natural movement of air/radon in your home by depressurizing the soil beneath the structure to prevent radon gas from moving through the house.
  2. We drill into the concrete foundation slab, basement floor, or surrounding earth to create a suction point(s) and connect a PVC pipe.
  3. We vent gas through a pipe that runs through a fan in the attic or along the top of the home. Then, radon is expelled outside.
  4. We seal all radon entry points with a urethane caulking compound, including cracks, gaps, and openings.
  5. We perform a final system analysis to inspect the fan and other key system details to ensure it performs correctly.
  6. We perform a radon test within 30 days of the system installation to ensure the system is working.

Job Stories From Parma, ID
Basement & Crawlspace Radon Mitigation in Parma, Idaho

A homeowner in Parma, Idaho, contacted Idaho Radon after a home radon test revealed elevated radon levels. The concern was especially important because a family member was living full-time in the basement, increasing the homeowner’s desire to reduce long-term radon exposure and create a healthier living environment.

After evaluating the home, Idaho Radon developed a mitigation plan that addressed both the basement and crawlspace. A suction point was established in the basement, with the radon vent piping routed into the crawlspace and then to the rear of the home where the mitigation fan was installed. This configuration provided an effective solution while keeping the exterior components in a less conspicuous location.

The crawlspace presented an additional challenge because foam board insulation covered portions of the foundation walls where the new barrier needed to be sealed directly to the concrete. Our team carefully removed the necessary foam board, installed and sealed the crawlspace barrier to the foundation, and then replaced the insulation after the mitigation work was completed.

The results demonstrated the effectiveness of the completed system. Post-mitigation testing showed a three-day average radon concentration of just 1.1 pCi/L, providing the homeowner with a significant reduction in radon levels and greater peace of mind for the family member living in the basement.
