Our Approach to Radon Mitigation

What to Expect from Radon Testing

Idaho Radon offers prompt scheduling, allowing you to set a radon testing appointment quickly and conveniently. Here, we will install a continuous radon detector. We will then plan a follow-up visit to go over the findings. There, the specialist will print the radon test results.

What to Do If Your Home Has High Radon Levels

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends radon reduction services if levels exceed 4 pCi/L (picocuries per liter). If there are high concentrations of radon gas in your home, we will develop a radon mitigation system tailored to your unique situation:

  1. We address the stack effect or natural movement of air/radon in your home by depressurizing the soil beneath the structure to prevent radon gas from moving through the house.
  2. We drill into the concrete foundation slab, basement floor, or surrounding earth to create a suction point(s) and connect a PVC pipe.
  3. We vent gas through a pipe that runs through a fan in the attic or along the top of the home. Then, radon is expelled outside.
  4. We seal all radon entry points with a urethane caulking compound, including cracks, gaps, and openings.
  5. We perform a final system analysis to inspect the fan and other key system details to ensure it performs correctly.
  6. We perform a radon test within 30 days of the system installation to ensure the system is working.

Job Stories From Sweet, ID
Crawlspace Radon Mitigation & Re-Encapsulation in Sweet, Idaho

A homeowner in Sweet, Idaho contacted Idaho Radon after radon levels in the home tested just below 4.0 pCi/L. With a newborn in the family, the homeowner wanted to reduce the radon level even further rather than simply accepting a result near the EPA action level. The crawlspace had also experienced water and moisture issues, making it important to address both the condition of the existing encapsulation and radon entering from beneath the home.

A previous contractor had encapsulated the crawlspace as part of moisture and mold remediation work, but the vapor barrier had not been properly sealed to the concrete foundation. The homeowner understood the importance of having the work evaluated by a professional radon mitigator and contacted Idaho Radon to determine what needed to be corrected.

Our team corrected the existing encapsulation by properly attaching and sealing the barrier to the concrete foundation footers with polyurethane sealant. We then installed approximately 150 feet of perforated corrugated piping beneath the existing barrier and connected it to an exterior radon fan. The completed system creates continuous depressurization beneath the crawlspace barrier to help prevent radon-containing soil gases from entering the home. In addition, the fan helps to pull moisture out from beneath the barrier.

This project demonstrates why proper crawlspace encapsulation is about more than simply covering the soil with a vapor barrier. Correct sealing and a professionally designed depressurization system are critical components when the goal is effective radon mitigation.

Following the project, the homeowner shared: “I would definitely recommend Todd. He's knowledgeable and gets the job done right!”
